Cousin Fun

Dawson has had a really fun weekend starting with Thanksgiving. Rebecca came up to visit Aunt Betty and some other family members, she is spending the night at my house and Dawson couldn't be happier. It has been so much fun. I took Victoria to get manicures and pedicures with me and I brushed and styled her hair. At least I get to scrunch up River's hair, but it's not the same as doing a girl's hair. We tried to take some pictures of all of the cousins together but it is really hard and River was not cooperating.

Feliz Dia de Gracias

We went to Austin on Wednesday morning. On Wednesday afternoon we went to Zilker Park with my dad and the boys got to ride the train. I love Austin! Thanksgiving was really yummy, Dawson ate bread and a chocolate "turkey" cupcake. River slept through most of the meal. The boys had a lot of fun playing with their cousins and feeding the deer. Dawson and Julian are both in Kindergarten and play so well together.

Early Childhood Intervention 2.0

Well, some of you may remember how ECI came out to work with River when he was about 6 months old. They worked with him and he progressed to the point where he no longer required services. He has been in a follow along program for about the past year and I fill out a questionnaire about his progress. There were some concerns from the last questionnaire and so this morning ECI came out to do an evaluation. River is delayed in his speech and will be re-enrolled in the regular program. This is pretty disappointing to me, but it is just the way things are and I've got to be accepting of it and do what I can to get him to where he should be. His main problem areas are: answering Who/Where/What questions and following 2-step directions.

Good news from the evaluation: River is in Shelly's words, "completely off the charts" as far as cognitive ability. She was amazed by all that he knows. He has great fine and gross motor skills. He is also normal socially.

So now ECI will travel out to visit him about twice a month to monitor his progress and give his school and me suggestions on ways to work with him. Then, when he turns 3 next August, they will help us make the transition to public school if necessary. Depending on his needs, that might be 3 hours a week of speech therapy or all day five days a week. He is in a critical time for development and we will have to watch him very closely for the next little while.

Yes, I am one of those people

I realize that Thanksgiving is not here yet, but I couldn't help it. As soon as David brought the boys back tonight, I pulled out all of the Christmas stuff. I won't have the boys with me this year and so I want to maximize all of the holiday time we have together. It only took about an hour and a half to put everything up. I don't really have that much stuff, but I also had to put everything up quickly because River was opening everything up as fast as he could screaming "I did it" and "Ta Da!". It was fun to watch their faces and I liked showing Dawson the things that he had made previously. I already have several outings with the boys planned to celebrate Christmas, mostly going to different productions and things around town.
In my mind as we put things together, I couldn't help but think of Alexa...we miss her.

Quick stories

It is funny the things that children inherit from their parents. River rubs his feet together as he is going to sleep. I share this tidbit especially for Shar and Joni who had to listen to me rub my feet together every night!

Dawson had a substitute therapist on Saturday, she said that she was really impressed with Dawson and that it was apparent that he had been going to therapy for most of his life. She praised us for catching him at an early age. It has been a long journey, with therapy appointments 2-3-and 4 times a week at different times during the past 4 years. I am hopeful and waiting for the day when his therapists say he no longer requires it. I am grateful for all of the people that love my boys!

Halloween

Dawson was Anakin Skywalker and River was a soldier (when he wore his costume). River did not want to wear his costume, but he learned "trick-or-treat" pretty quickly and it has been a favorite phrase ever since. The funniest thing I have learned from all of this is River's strange taste in candy. He'll eat anything really, except for redhots. His favorites are really sour things like lemon heads and rootbeer flavored dum-dums! Both boys love anything chocolate of course.
